A feature documentary film that premiered at the 2019 Cleveland International Film Festival, MOSUL shows first-hand the battle to liberate Iraq’s second-largest city from ISIS. The fight for Mosul begins in the fall of 2016, when more than 100,000 Iraqi soldiers and militia comprising Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds, and Christians (opposing groups turned allies) join forces to fight a common enemy (ISIS) that has taken control of the city.
MOSUL, produced by Two Rivers Pictures, goes beyond the titanic clash of opposing military forces to tell the gripping stories of the people who played key roles in the battle: from the Sunni tribal leader known as "The Crocodile", to the Iranian-backed widow and militia leader fighting to avenge her husband’s death. The movie MOSUL also captures the human suffering of refugee camps and ISIS insurgentswho have been detained while trying to re-infiltrate the eastern part of the city. All of this is narrated by Ali Maula, an Iraqi journalist who follows the liberation forces throughout the operation, exploring the unlikely alliance of former foes from its onset to the aftermath of their victory.
